OPTICAL RETURN LOSS TEST SET, 1550 +/-15 nm. Reflection rabge: 0 to -70 dB. Output>-6.5dBm. With FC/APC fiber adapter, and internal fiber connector looks quite clean under fiber scope for female connector. Built-in Ni-Cd rechargeble battery. AC power adapter/charger is missing. We will include one 9 V alkaline battery backup. For long term use, you may use your own 9V Ni-MH rechargeable battery.
We have tested on a JDS FC/APC-FC/UPC SMF jumper, got back reflection -14.86dB from non-terminated FC/UPC connector (see 7th photo below), considering there is near 0.1dB FC/APC connector loss, this result matches theoretical prediction of about 3.4% (-14.7dB) reflection from bare glass very well. We also tested on a FC/APC to near-100%-reflector jumper(Store Product Code: OFC-REFL-REF-005C), got back reflection -0.46dB (see last photo), considering there is about 0.1dB FC/APC connector loss, this result matches theoretical prediction very well.
Note: since internal connector is FC/APC and back-reflection of its open end would be less than -70dB, so we used this as reference of zero back reflection, and press "ZERO" before RL test.
EXFO BRT tester has better accuracy than FIS ORL tester, due to better specification, less PDL, better reference method. The reference method is easier and cheaper, since it does not require goldtip reflector. -
