It is used to avoid reflection from fiber device. You can use it at unused end connector) of FBG, 2x2 coupler, dispersion-compensating-unit (FBG based), and even WDM, demux, and in reflection-sensitive systems. The unused ends of these FBG-like devices should be terminated with FC/PC, FC/UPC, or FC/SPC connectors (SC and ST are also OK if you apply hybrid FC-ST, FC-ST adapter).
